Understanding the National Energy Dilemma. Indexed Only: ED118363

This graphic representation of our energy dilemma provides government officials, industry, and general public with an understanding of the broad problems and complexity of our energy crisis. An energy display system projects effects of energy policies on our domestic energy situation. This display contains sheets indicating total energy flow patterns. Cross plots provide specific information on each item. Data are based on 1950, 1960, and 1970 figures with projections for 1980 and 1990. To understand the energy display system, accompanying fold-outs with specific text descriptions are provided. Percentages of residual and commercial, industrial, non-energy, transportation, electrical energy generation, coal/gas, oil/gas, and coal/oil uses are presented. Hydroelectric, geothermal, nuclear, gas (imports), gas (domestic), coal, oil (imports), shale, and oil (domestic) energy sources are displayed in percentages in flow patterns. Energy units are one million barrels per day of oil equivalent. Fold-outs consist of total energy flow patterns (1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990); cross plots of "efficiency,""end uses,""form of use,""supply/demand charts"--1960-1985, 1990-2050: charts of "guidance" required and demand projections. Appended material contains energy references and conversion tables. (BP)

JR: Not online, but charts are supposed to be great. There is a critique (find URL) of the assumptions in this docuement, though the presentation is still praised)

The three-dimensional Energy Display System describing the nation's energy situation was developed by Jack Bridges and first unveiled in a paper, Understanding the National Energy Dilemma (EAPA 74-2: abst. 234). This book updates the earlier work performed in the Fall of 1973, written with the hindsight of the embargo, the energy crisis, and the economic woes of recent years. Chapter II, The Energy Display System, contains 1950, 1960, 1970, and 1975 energy flow patterns and 1980 and 1990 projected energy flow patterns. Trends in efficiency, end use, form of use, and supply/demand are discussed in Chapter III followed by an examination of energy supplies and resources next. Examining Our Energy Demands (population, the economy, the environment, and the conservation ethic) and Into the Next Era are the final chapters. Much of the information is presented on foldouts. This energy module is intended for an introductory course on energy for secondary school classes. It consists of behavioral objectives, general background, vocabulary, lesson outlines, coordinated activities, and an annotated bibliography of resources. It is intended to provide a fundamental guide for the establishment of the teacher's own energy curriculum. Because the module is intended to include a shop or lab component, the first two lessons deal with a preliminary introduction and safety.

Abstract: This study showed that the coverage of energy varies considerably among secondary schools in Great Britain and that British students lack a clear knowledge of energy issues in general and nuclear energy in particular, are indifferent to conservation, and are reluctant to accept nuclear power. Energy education must be given greater emphasis. (Author/RM)

Nation's Energy Future, 1973: http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/product.biblio.jsp?query_id=1&page=0&osti_id=4384705

This report, developed under the general guidance of the Energy Policy Office, is in response to the directive of the President on June 29, 1973, to the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission to review Federal and private energy R and D and to recommend an integrated program for the Nation. The report is based largely on the results of: (1) a group of Energy Workshops organized under the sponsorship of Cornell University, (2) sixteen Technical Review Panels of 121 Federal employees from 36 Departments and Agencies assisted by 282 consultants from the private sector, and (3) an Overview Panel that reviewed the results from the Workshops and Technical Panels. A draft of the report was sent to more than 100 individuals for comment, as well as to all concerned government Departments and Agencies. In addition, Dr. Ray consulted personally with numerous leaders in government, industry, and the scientific community throughout the period of the Report' s preparation. Specifically, the report recommends: (1) a national energy R and D program, (2) a five-year, billion Federal energy R and D program, and (3) the FY 1975 Federal budget for energy R and D. The recommended program, based on what is now known, is both necessary and sufficient to maximize energy R and D's contribution to the Nation's energy goals; even so, 1985 is the earliest date by which self-sufficiency can reasonably be expected. By 1980, the recommended program can reduce oil imports to half those currently projected; other extraordinary measures will be required to displace the other half. (LMT)

Energy Education and the School Curriculum. Research Report 1980-2.

National School Board Association

Since the nation's schools can play a major role in encouraging energy conservation, an energy curriculum should cover four objectives: (1) generating an awareness of energy conserns, (2) fostering the development of responsible energy use habits, (3) preparing students for energy-related careers, and (4) creating an understanding of international energy issues. Presented in this report is a primer for school districts interested in developing an energy curriculum. It focuses on objectives, benefits, successful programs, and steps school boards can take to implement programs and gain community support. Also included are appendices containing a bibliography of energy education materials, a state-by-state listing of contacts and resources, and a guide to federal assistance. (Author/WB)

Eight examples of innovative and outstanding energy education programs are described. These programs were selected using state criteria and at least four independent reviewers. While Project Synthesis offered a desired state, these examples of excellence provided views of what is already a reality. The goals of an exemplary science program are provided along with the criteria for excellence. The programs described are: (1) "Pathways to the Future"; (2) "The Best of Energy--$1,000,000 Energy Challenge"; (3) "The Energy Management Center"; (4) "Energy Education at Houston's Outdoor Education Center"; (5) "The Energy Studies Center: Providing Skills For The Future"; (6) "Poss's Energy Posse"; (7) "Toward an Energy Consciousness"; and (8) "Energy Studies and Physical Sciences." DOE Education, 1994:

Since its formation in 1977, US DOE has been authorized to support education programs that help ensure an adequate supply of scientists, engineers, and technicians for energy-related research, production activities, and technology transfer. A national conference in 1989 produced a clear vision of the important role that DOE, its facilities, and its 169,000 Federal and contract employees can play in the educational life of their communities and the Nation. Many of the programs listed in this catalog are the result of this new vision; others have existed for many years. Purpose of this catalog is to make all DOE education efforts more widely known so that more teachers, students, and others can benefit. Supporting the hundreds of education programs (precollege, undergraduate, graduate, public) is the network of DOE national laboratories, technology centers, and other research facilities. Brief descriptions of each facility, its programs, and contact information for its education personnel are included.

Nebraska Energy Education-1982. An Evaluation (BTU and ECAP), 121p

To determine the success of Nebraska's 3-year effort in energy education, an evaluation was conducted to solicit data concerning the effectiveness of on-going energy curricula using teacher responses. These curricula include "Energy Conservation Activity Packets" (ECAP) for elementary programs and "Basic Teaching Units on Energy" (BTU) for secondary programs. An adjunct study was also conducted to assess student attitudes relative to energy conservation attitudes. Rationale for the evaluation, methodology, results (separate sections for ECAP and BTU results), conclusions, and recommendations are included. Supporting documentation in appendices includes: survey instruments and cover letters; non-analyzed ECAP and BTU project data; list of educational service units; dissemination methodology/samples; ECAP pilot schools; and adjunct study (attitudes) materials. Results (based on curriculum users) indicate a need for increased awareness of the existence of energy education curricula, greater administrative support for program implementation, and inservice programs. Results of the adjunct (attitude) study indicate little change in students' energy attitudes during 1979-81, no significant relationship between teacher and student energy attitudes, and a direct relationship between teacher attitudes and teacher concern about energy education as an innovation. The study also found that providing teachers with knowledge of their students' energy attitudes/behaviors increases teachers'"search behavior" for curricular alternatives. (Author/JN)
